(Hannibal, MO) – The Hannibal Clinic’s new Sleep Lab opened on Monday, September 28th. Tests are available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The two-bedroom lab was designed with a homey feel. Each room has a bathroom, television and comfortable sleeping arrangements in a private setting.
Subjects are monitored from an adjacent control center with state-of-the-art Sandman high resolution audio and video and multi-channel polysomnography recording systems in each room. Polysomnography is a part of sleep research that uses several sensors to measure brain activity, eye movement, muscle tension, respiration, blood oxidization and pulse.
Sleep Labs monitor patients with sleeping disorders. Major sleep disorders include Insomnia, Narcolepsy, Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and Sleep Apnea.
People with Insomnia have problems falling asleep, awaken frequently during the night and/or wake up too early. Insomnia also causes daytime fatigue.
People with Narcolepsy suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness causing inappropriate sleeping during the day. Narcolepsy sleep may occur with or without warning.
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) causes people to feel itching and tingling in their legs and sometimes their arms during sleep. These sensations urge the sleeper to awaken and move their limbs for relief.
Sleep Apnea symptoms include waking up with a soar and/or dry throat, occasionally waking up with a choking sensation, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness and reoccurring insomnia or awakenings.
Millions of Americans suffer from sleep disorders. Please call the Hannibal Clinic at (573) 231-3178 for more information about our sleep lab.
